  • Sage - common - Fyne Herbs

    Sage - common

    8 reviews

There’s nothing common about this gorgeous evergreen shrub, with its pungent downy leaves and stunning purple flowers. A herb garden must-have, sage grows best in full sun, which brings out the flavour of the leaves. It does very well in pots or containers on a sunny patio or balcony and will love being outside in a bed with other Mediterranean varieties. It’s hardy and drought tolerant once established and needs a bit of space to reach its full potential.  Sage will be really happy growing in our pot on a sunny windowsill until it needs potting on.

  • Sage - purple - Fyne Herbs

    Sage - purple

    2 reviews

Amongst the mainly green leaved herb community, purple sage stands out as a beautiful, dusky contrast. It has all the culinary benefits of common sage but is said to have a slightly more peppery taste. The delightful bronze purple leaves and stems will gradually fade to a grey-green hue, so make the most of them in a large patio pot or sunny spot in your herb garden. It’s hardy and drought tolerant once established and needs a bit of space to reach its full potential.  Purple sage will be really happy growing in our pot on a sunny windowsill until it needs potting on.

  • Selfheal

    Fyne Herbs singles Selfheal

    Out of stock

Selfheal does what it says on the tin when it comes to traditional medicinal use. Also known as “heal-all” or “allheal,” this low-growing native plant with lovely purple flowers has been prized for centuries in herbalist practices. It’s also got form in the kitchen, with a mild slightly bitter taste suited to leafy salads, and gorgeous flowers which make a wonderful garnish.  Very easy to grow, it’s a native hardy perennial loved by bees and butterflies. It’s not generally a problem for pets, selfheal is an ideal creeping plant for a dog safe or cat friendly flower garden.

  • St John's Wort - Fyne Herbs

    St John's Wort

    4 reviews

Despite the unfortunate name, this is actually a pretty native wildflower and is a medicinal herb garden superstar. It’s local, so will be happy in most conditions and soil types, although it does do better in a fertile, moist spot. St John’s Wort has long been used as a mood enhancer and is known as a herbal antidepressant. It needs a bit of space and develops into a small, hardy perennial shrub. Suitable for large pots or unfancied parts of your garden, in partial shade.  St John’s wort will be happy growing in our pot on a sunny windowsill until it needs potting on.

  • Stevia - Fyne Herbs

    Stevia

Stevia is also known as candyleaf, sweetcheeks, sugarleaf and Sweet Herb of Paraguay – you can guess why. It’s hundreds of times sweeter than sugar and originates from South America, where it’s a valuable medicinal herb too. As a native of the tropics it loves similar conditions – a warm, sunny spot in dappled shade with its roots in damp, fertile, well-draining soil. Stevia is a frost tender perennial so will need to be bought indoors if you want it to survive overwinter. Stevia is pretty vigorous but will be ok in our pot on a sunny windowsill to begin with.

  • Tarragon - French - Fyne Herbs

    Tarragon - French

    5 reviews

    Out of stock

French Tarragon has an unfair reputation as a problem - difficult to grow and quick to die. You just need to remember its more tender than most and hates overwintering in wet soil. Plant in full sun, in a herb bed or large pot with fertile, light, free-draining soil and you’ll be fine. It’ll grow vigorously when happy and should return again and again as long as it’s tucked up over winter or bought indoors (in pots).  Tarragon will be really happy growing in our pot on a sunny windowsill until it needs potting on.

  • Thyme - Common - Fyne Herbs

    Thyme - Common

    3 reviews

There are lots of thyme varieties, but this is the original and the best. The nearest thing to wild thyme, dried bunches of which you’ll see hanging in markets from Provence to Tuscany. As you can imagine, it likes a warm, bright location. South facing is best, planting in full sun brings out the essential oils in the leaves, concentrating the flavour. All thyme enjoys light, well-drained soil and hates waterlogging, especially in winter.  Common Thyme will be really happy growing in our pot on a sunny windowsill until it needs potting on.

    Thyme - Lemon

    5 reviews

Thyme with a citrussy twist. Lemon scented and herb garden must have, this thyme variation has everything. It’s a tough, Mediterranean sun lover that enjoys light, free draining soil and hates waterlogging. An excellent variety for pots where you can control the drainage and moisture. In cooking it pairs brilliantly with chicken and the higher levels of citronella in the lemony leaves, give it medicinal powers other thymes don’t have… Your Lemon Thyme will be really happy growing in our pot on a sunny windowsill until it needs potting on.

  • Toadflax

    Fyne Herbs singles Toadflax

    8 in stock

Toadflax is a delightful, cheerful wildflower herb which spreads freely and can get a bit out of hand. It’s hard to complain at its profligacy because Toadflax flowers are a designed for bees and look simply gorgeous. Often called ‘wild snapdragons’ due to their resemblance to Antirrhinums, they’re actually second cousins or something and are certainly more useful! Unfortunately, Toadflax doesn't play well with cats and dogs - it can be toxic if eaten.  Historically, Toadflax was used as a natural dye for producing yellow hues. It was considered a “herb of the people,” appreciated for its medicinal properties and its association with purity and resilience.

  • Valerian - Fyne Herbs

    Valerian

    Out of stock

Valerian is a pretty, native wildflower which attracts an abundance of friendlies to your garden, including cats (friendly or not) and has a rich medicinal history. It has many common names including ‘all-heal’ and ‘phu’ (pooh) which is appropriate as the dried root smells of sweaty socks! Cats love its ripe scent; it stimulates them in a similar way to catnip. It loves a rich, moist position and will grow in most aspects and soil types.    Valerian is very vigorous but will be ok in our pot on a sunny windowsill to begin with, although it really needs planting out asap.

Unfortunately, it's not nostalgic rose-tintedness, there's been an 80% reduction in UK butterflies since the 1970's. Hopefully times are changing, with fewer pesticides used and rewilding being encouraged. These herbs will do their bit.

Since early man (and women) first became aware of B.O., herbs of many sorts have been used to de-odour, cleanse and heal the skin. Unsurprisingly, the herbs in this collection all bring scent to the party (except Marigold but she brings the colour), but that’s not their only super-power. They all have different, traditional skin healing properties and are lovely in handmade soaps.

Popularised by the famously multi-estranged folk duo Simon & Garfunkel, Scarborough Fair is a traditional northern English ballad about the impossible tasks a girl will to do to claim her true love. However, the inspiration from this collection came from the fabulous ‘Scarborough’ sausages of butchers Burton & Son in Saffron Walden. Original lyrics used ‘savory’ instead of ‘parsley’ – which is handy.

Long before the menopause was recognised as a normal part of the aging process, women looked to herbs for natural menopause relief. This collection of herb plants have all traditionally been used in various menopause remedies and make a humorous and possibly useful, holistic gift for friends, family or yourself. Women have long been managing their menopause symptoms naturally using herbs instead of HRT. The herbs in this collection are most often used in tea to treat hot flushes, night sweats, low mood and energy. Essential oils can also be extracted and used in aromatherapy, atomisers, tinctures and balms. Whilst these are believed to be some of the best herbs for relieving menopause symptoms, they are not a substitute for professional advice about treatment.

Chamomile - Roman With its flat white petals and fuzzy golden cones of nectar rich flowers, chamomile makes a perfect landing pad and feeding station for a number of butterfly species, especially smaller ones.
Chive This early flowering herb is one of the 10 most nectar producing plants in the UK. A butterfly magnet which will grow almost anywhere and is particularly suited a pot on a sunny patio.
Dill Dill is a fantastic herb for late butterflies as it can flower into autumn. If you’re really lucky, in warmer southern climes you may be rewarded by a visiting European Swallowtail, whose caterpillars will eat the leaves.
Marjoram - sweet Marjoram produces masses of small flowers in upright clusters which are ideal for butterflies. Deadhead regularly, the flowers may last into autumn - providing valuable energy for hibernation or migration.
Lavender - Hidcote The tall spikes with dense flower heads packed together at the end, provide a bountiful feeding opportunity for a number of species including Small Tortoiseshell, Red Admiral and Peacock.
Rosemary - Miss Jessop’s Upright Woody, shrubby herbs like rosemary not only provide lots of nectar but also places to shelter over winter. Rosemary’s early flowers will give awakening butterflies a welcome feed after winter dormancy.
