Our Unique Decorative Pots

About Our Special Pots

All our herbs come with their own, decorative home to use indoors or out – or both! Our unique, rustic plant pots are made of recycled cardboard and are 100% biodegradable. They allow you to grow your herbs indoors on a sunny windowsill right away, or pot up and pop outside. They’re made from a natural product and will start to degrade and discolour immediately, especially when wet.

Made to degrade!

We wanted a pot which left minimal impact on the environment, so made one from paper which will gracefully biodegrade. The type of growing conditions dictate the speed of break down. Moist plants in dry pots on a windowsill will last for ages (watch for a mouldy bottom which may mark surfaces). Pots outside in very wet conditions and over winter will break down more quickly. Mould will appear and the pots will become soft, especially if there are no drainage holes.

Water resistant

To prolong their life, the pots have a natural soya gum coating on the inside and base to make them water resistant, it leaves a milky residue when wet which is nothing to worry about. Damp pots on windowsills may mark painted surfaces as they get older.

Room to grow

Like a new school blazer, our decorative pots are a size or two larger than the herbs, to give the little darlings room to grow. Your plants will be happy on a sunny windowsill as they are, in the decorative pots for a while – depending on variety, size and season! Or you can pot them on…

Potting on

Once they’re settled in, your herbs will benefit from being potted-on (moved) out of their plastic pots into the decorative ones or straight into the garden. A good sign is a ‘rooty bottom’ with lots of thick strands growing out of the hole in the base of the pot.

You’ll need to make some holes in the base of the decorative pot.

Using a drill is the quickest and simplest method. Turn the pot bottom side up and off you go.

If you don’t have a drill, you can use a corkscrew. You might need to soften the bottom of the pot first by leaving it in approx. 2cm of water (inside and out) for a few hours.

Use the corkscrew to first open a bottle of your favourite plonk and then make a several holes in the bottom of the pot. Poke through a pencil to widen them, trim off any access paper with a sharp knife.

It’s important to use a good soil mix for your herbs.

Pot disposal

Our pots are a made from a natural product and will start to degrade and discolour immediately, especially when wet. Eventually they will fall apart in a mouldy, pulpy mess which can be scooped up and added to your compost heap or kitchen waste recycling.

Alternatively, when the pot is old and falling apart, plant the whole thing – pot and herb into the ground or larger pot and it will carry-on degrading naturally.

Our pots are not slug and snail proof, and the squelchy, crunchy blighters may have a little nibble on them. At least they’re eating the pots and not your plants!

We sell herbs in FULL collections of SIX plants.

You can either choose one of our exclusive, curated herb collections or create your own MIX SIX plant collection (any variety or combination).

All come with decorative pots, wooden plant labels, herb plants snips and a comprehensive growing guide.

Environmental Policy

A love and passion for nature is at the heart of our business, you can’t love herbs and not love the environment. We try our very best to be as green as possible and are always striving to do better.

Our Plants

All our herbs are grown in the UK by independent nurseries, using a reduced-peat compost. We have a strict ‘no neonicotinoids’ pesticide policy and none of our plants are treated with anything that contains them. We encourage our growers to use biological pest control where possible.

The plastic pots containing the herbs are made from recycled plastic and are recyclable.

Decorative Pots

Our unique, bio-degradable pots are made from 100% recycled cardboard pulp, and sealed inside and base with a soya gum water-resistant coating. Made to degrade, they can be recycled, composted or simply buried in the garden.

Wooden Labels

Our wooden plant labels are made from 100% renewable bamboo and are FSC certified (Forest Stewardship Council). The clear stickers are recyclable.

Packaging & Print

Our packaging is 100% recyclable including the tiny cellophane wrapper around the snips. Everything else is bio-degradable and can be chucked onto your compost heap. The herb guide is printed on FSC certified paper and our packaging tape is eco-friendly too.

Sun is the most important thing in a basil’s life, shortly followed by rich, moist compost. As long as you’ve somewhere bright and warm to grow this gorgeous herb, then you’ll be rewarded with the most Mediterranean of Mediterranean smells and flavours. Harvesting the leaves regularly will give you more but it’s worth growing several plants to spread the load.

Catmint is generally milder and less smelly than catnip but can still have a feelgood effect on felines. It has a minty aroma and produces spikes of beautiful deep violet flowers which will attract bees, potentially leading to some amusing but painful cat v bee interactions. Grow along the front of a border or in a raised bed, to spill out giving your kitty a nice comfy spot in the sun. Catnip will be really happy growing in our pot on a sunny windowsill until it needs potting on.

Chervil is an attractive, ferny herb with a delicate anise, grassy smell. It’s under rated for some reason, perhaps because the plants resemble cow parsley, but it definitely pulls its weight. The mild flavour is particularly suited to eggs and sauces and it’s an important member of fine herbes. Generally grown as an annual, it likes a cooler, partly shady spot out of the midday sun. As a lush leaf producer, it needs rich, fertile soil and depth for the long tap root to quest for water in dry conditions.

Roman or common chamomile is grown for its flowers, a different, creeping variety ('Treneague') is used for lawns. The flowers produced by Roman chamomile are primarily used to make a soothing and relaxing tea. Like its toga wearing namesakes, it loves lounging about in the sun, so plant somewhere warm and bright. An indoor windowsill is a good place. Keep moist especially in hot weather. Chamomile will be really happy growing in our pot on a sunny windowsill until it needs potting on.
