These herbs are good for pots and can be planted now. Outside some will need protection from early frosts if you’re prone to them, especially very tender varieties like basil.

Angelica is a tall, graceful herb plant with hollow, fluted stems up to 7ft tall. Clusters of small yellow or greenish flowers are arranged into large, striking umbels which will add interest and stature to your herb garden. Buy garden ready, 9cm angelica herb plants with wooden plant label.

African basil will excel in your garden as well as in the kitchen. To be honest, it’s a bit of a show-off – the leaves start off a delightful purple colour, which turn green as they mature and feature striking purple veins. It then throws up gorgeous spikes of deep pink flowers which are a magnet for bees and pollinators (it’s also known as Bee Basil). Because it doesn’t set seed, the flowers last for ages and are great value in pots, beds or borders. It’s a vigorous basil and can grow to 75cm tall, so needs a largish pot if growing inside.

Bush Basil (aka Greek Basil) is a tough little small leaved variety which is less namby-pamby and a bit more punchy than the more temperamental sweet basil. Ideally suited to pots on a patio or balcony where you can enjoy the scent and leaves, it has a more pungent, spicy flavour and is wonderful in Mediterranean cuisine. Greek basil is generally grown as an annual, but it is a tender perennial and if you’ve a greenhouse or poly tunnel you might be able to over-winter it. It’s small, tightly packed leaves and tough stem can allow for a bit of topiary, if you’re that way inclined.

Basil but with a twist, a citrussy twist! Lemon Basil (Ocimum citriodorum) is a wonderfully aromatic herb that combines the sweet, spicy flavour of traditional basil with refreshing notes of lemon. Popular in Thai, Indonesian and Vietnamese cuisine, Lemon Basil is prized for its bright citrus fragrance and versatility in the kitchen. Easy to grow in containers, raised beds and herb gardens, Lemon Basil thrives in a warm, sunny position and produces masses of fresh leaves throughout the summer. If you like bees, you’ll love these! Bergamot is renowned for its attraction to our bumbling and honey making friends, Bee balm being a common name amongst others. It’s worth its place for the flowers alone, which bloom into lilac pink spidery fireworks. However monarda was used medicinally by the native American tribe giving its name to ‘Oswego tea’, drunk for its antiseptic, digestive and calming properties. Lemon Bergamot, monarda citriodora is a really special variety with strong, citrus scented leaves combining with the unique bergamot smell. It's totally the best for a relaxing herbal, lemony tea.

Betony is a pretty native herb which can be found in meadows, grasslands and hedgerows - it has many common names, of which ‘Hedge nettle’ is one. A herb steeped in history, folklore, and practical uses, betony offers a little bit of everything. Its healing properties, magical associations, and easy-to-grow nature make it a fantastic addition to any herb garden. The vibrant spikes of purple flowers are a magnet for bees, butterflies and pollinators.

You may see this robust, leafy annual growing wild in grass verges, on waste ground or in field margins. Introduced by the Romans, it loves an open, sunny position and will happily self-seed. Most of the plant is edible, with a mild cucumber, slightly salty taste. Toss a few ice cubes each containing a bright borage blue flower, into a long, cool G&T on a hot summer’s day.

Cardoon is a stately, statuesque perennial worth its place in any herb garden or wild meadow. It looks like the love child of a thistle and a teasel but is in fact the wild cousin of the globe artichoke. Considered a delicacy back in the day and is still enjoyed in rural Italy, the stems have a celery-like crunch and flavour of artichoke. Cynara cardunculus needs a load of space and a sunny position in fertile, free draining soil. The striking foliage can reach 2m tall with beautiful thistly flowerheads which are a magnet for bees and pollinators.

Catmint is generally milder and less smelly than catnip but can still have a feelgood effect on felines. It has a minty aroma and produces spikes of beautiful deep violet flowers which will attract bees, potentially leading to some amusing but painful cat v bee interactions. Grow along the front of a border or in a raised bed, to spill out giving your kitty a nice comfy spot in the sun. Not all cats respond to the smell of nepetalactone, an essential oil, but those that do have a feelgood reaction – becoming stimulated, then wacked out! Roman or common chamomile is grown for its flowers, a different, creeping variety ('Treneague') is used for lawns. The flowers produced by Roman chamomile are primarily used to make a soothing and relaxing tea. Like its toga wearing namesakes, it loves lounging about in the sun, so plant somewhere warm and bright. An indoor windowsill is a good place. Keep moist especially in hot weather. Chervil is an attractive, ferny herb with a delicate anise, grassy smell. It’s under rated for some reason, perhaps because the plants resemble cow parsley, but it definitely pulls its weight. The mild flavour is particularly suited to eggs and sauces and it’s an important member of fine herbes. Generally grown as an annual, it likes a cooler, partly shady spot out of the midday sun. As a lush leaf producer, it needs rich, fertile soil and depth for the long tap root to quest for water in dry conditions.

Chicory with its latin name of Cichorium intybus might sound like a spell from Harry Potter (for making a weird coffee-like drink maybe) but it’s a herb with multiple uses and a rich history. People tend to think of Chicory as a war time coffee substitute or for using its peppery leaves to liven up a salad, but it’s actually a wonderful garden plant with beautiful blue flowers and a vigorous climbing habit. Chicory is a sprawling perennial which can reach 1.5m tall, with some support. It’s hardy down to -10 degrees so is perfectly happy in most conditions. You can eat the leaves, enjoy the flowers (along with bees and butterflies) and at the end of the season, use the root for loads of things.

Chives are a kitchen garden staple and if allowed to will seed quite happily about the garden. They’re a member of the allium family, alongside onions, garlic and leeks and have a mild onion flavour too – which is perfect for sauces, dressings, marinades and garnish. Easy to grow, choose a pot or at the front of a border in sunny or partially shaded spot. When harvesting, cut individual leaves down to just above the base – let some flowers grow for the bees and your salads. Garlic chives are an allium like chives, but a different species altogether; allium tuberosum. They originated in China and spread throughout Asia before the rest of the world. Larger and more vigorous than chives, with flatter, broader leaves and a distinct garlicky taste. Garlic chives are easy to grow and actually considered invasive pests in some countries. They enjoy the same conditions as regular chives, including being particularly suited to pots.

Coriander is the go-to herb for use in curries and south Asian cuisine. The leaves have a fresh, citrussy, lemony flavour and the seeds a warming, nutty, zesty taste. It’s quite literally a ‘marmite’ herb as up to 20% of people find the flavour of coriander has an abhorrent rotten, soapy taste. This is actually due to a variation in a certain gene, the incidence of which differs with ethnicity.

Vietnamese coriander is an aromatic herb with a completely different flavour to its sometimes, soapy cousin. It’s a staple in South Asian and Northeast Indian cuisine, the leaves lending a vibrant, zesty hand to salads, soups, stir-fries and stews when added late on. The leaves look similar to lemon verbena and it enjoys similar conditions, it also enjoys a long, cool mojito with its mate Lemon V. Quite a vigorous grower once it gets going, so using the leaves regularly keeps it tidy and in check. Persicaria odorata is a tender perennial which is easy to grow if kept somewhere frost free, warm and sunny. It likes moist, fertile soil but not wet and is a great variety for pots. A cat and dog safe plant and one for a pet friendly flower garden.

Cowslip (Primula veris), also known as Herb Peter, Key Flower, or Mayflower, is one of Britain’s most beloved springtime wildflowers. With its nodding clusters of golden, bell-shaped blooms and gentle honeyed scent, cowslip has long been cherished in folklore, medicine, cooking, and gardening. Once very wide spread, you know may only see small clusters of these cheerful harbingers of spring in fields, along roadsides and on grass verges and banks. A UK native with a rich history and folklore it was thought to ward off evil spirits and reveal hidden fairy treasure! In traditional medicine cowslip plants were used as an expectorant to sooth coughs and colds, as a mild sedative and to ease rheumatism and joint pain. Cowslip wildflowers have a mildly sweet, floral, honey-like flavour with subtle green and herbal notes. Both cowslip flowers and young leaves have culinary potential, particularly in desserts and syrups.

The Curry Plant, botanically known as Helichrysum italicum, is a small, silvery evergreen shrub famous for its warm, curry-like aroma. Also called Immortelle, Everlasting, or Italian Strawflower, it smells unmistakably like curry powder. However, not to be confused with curry leaves, a staple of Indian cuisine which are from a Curry Tree (Bergera koenigii). This Mediterranean native is still valued for its culinary flair – adding a pleasingly mild curry flavour and aroma to dishes. Curry plants are a worth their place in your herb garden for their looks alone – unusual silvery foliage is studded with small, golden yellow flowers in summer. A beautiful and aromatic woody perennial which will delight the senses (and bees and butterflies!).

Dill is a wonderfully aromatic plant and is worth a place in any herb garden. The leaves are prized for their sweet anise flavour which has none of the liquorice strength of fennel, and the seeds for their pickling power. Generally grown as an annual because it’s not hardy, it will be ok over winter in a greenhouse and suits growing in deep pots – to accommodate the long root. Grow in a sunny position and keep moist. Fennel is a large, upright herb with a dense clump of stalks covered in delicate, ferny, liquorice smelling leaves. If you’ve only room for one, then bronze fennel is the best to grow. It’s common fennel’s identical twin but you get the added benefit of a beautiful, coppery hue to the wispy foliage. It too is easy to grow and vigorous, also producing intense yellow, hoverfly landing pads of flowers. Grow a single plant in a wide, deep pot in fertile, moist, well-drained soil and you’ll be richly rewarded. Fennel is very vigorous but will be ok in our pot on a sunny windowsill to begin with.

Foxglove (Digitalis purpurea) is a native wildflower herb with a rich and ground breaking medicinal history. It’s a cottage garden staple with hundreds of varieties in different colours - all bred from this original woodland dwelling plant. All parts of the plant are highly toxic to humans and animals so beware if you’ve nibbly cats and dogs or inquisitive young children. Foxgloves are one of Britain’s most recognisable wildflowers, instantly spotted by its tall spires of dangling, thimble-shaped blooms. Also known as fairy gloves, witches’ bells, dead man’s bells, or folk’s glove, they are especially adored by bumble bees. In the 18th century, English physician William Withering revolutionised cardiac medicine by identifying compounds in foxgloves which are used to this day to treat heart conditions.

This gorgeous little herb is known as the wild pansy, but is actually a viola. It has a traditional use in love potions and to cure ailments of the heart, Cupid is said to have struck the plant with an arrow which bled purple with ‘loves wound’. You’ll love it in the herb garden because it prefers places others don’t like – even cool, shady areas. The dainty flowers add the finishing touch to a summer salad or long, cool beverage. Herb Robert is a type of native wild geranium with pretty pink flowers, which thrives almost anywhere. It’s an important wildflower herb for bees and pollinators and has a rich history of medicinal use and spiritualism. Also known as Stinking Bob, this cheerful little fella has a dark side which is that it has a rather pungent, off-putting, musty smell when crushed. Bluntly – think fox wee! Don’t let that put you off though. It’s delicate pink flowers and ability to grow in most soils and aspects make it an attractive choice for areas of the garden where other plants struggle. Thought to be named after a medieval monk - St Robert of Molesme, who popularised its use medicinally, using it to stop bleeding, healing wounds, and treating infections.

For some reason, Hyssop is a lesser known and grown herb. It was big in antiquity – used as an important culinary and medicinal plant and valued for its spiritual cleansing and protection against evil. A member of the mint family, it has a wonderful, minty floral taste with slightly bitter lavender overtones. Sometimes known as Greek Valerian, Charity, or Abscess Root, Jacob’s Ladder is a charming, cottage-garden perennial that combines soft beauty with a rich history of folklore, medicine and symbolism. Best loved for its elegant, ladder-like foliage and clouds of blue or violet flowers, this plant is as useful to pollinators as loved by bees. Historically, Polemonium caeruleum was cultivated in monastery gardens and physic gardens during the Middle Ages. Herbalists valued it for its calming and expectorant properties, while folklore credited it with the ability to restore harmony and protect against illness.

Lady’s Bedstraw (Galium verum), also known as Yellow Bedstraw or Maid’s Hair, is a charming, honey-scented wildflower loved by bees, revered by herbalists, and cherished by gardeners. A UK and European native, it was prized as a stuffing for beds (hence the name) due to its sweet scent and insect repelling properties. It was said to be used by the Virgin Mary as bedding straw in baby Jesus’s manger. Easy to grow and used to our unpredictable climate, Lady’s Bedstraw’s golden yellow flowers are a magnet for bees and butterflies and was a popular symbol of love, happiness and fertility. Practical too – the roots were used to create a natural red dye and in cheesemaking as a natural rennet.

Hidcote is an English lavender (rather than French) and is the most widely grown variety in the UK, with good reason. It’s super tough – hardy, drought resistant and positively enjoys rubbish soil, it can also take a severe crew-cut if necessary. Hidcote is an early flowering lavender and is a magnet for bees and butterflies. This variety is known for producing high quality essential oil. This is likely the variety you saw. Lemon verbena has the strongest lemony smell of any herb – it out zests lemon balm, lemon thyme and lemongrass with ease. It’s a quick growing plant which will form a reasonably sized woody shrub in the first season. Lemon verbena is a tender perennial and is unlikely to overwinter unless you bring it indoors, it actually makes a pretty decent all year round houseplant. If you’re going to grow an ornamental grass why not choose one which smells lovely and has all sorts of culinary and medicinal uses? Lemon Grass originated in Southeast Asia but became popular across the ancient world as a treatment for infections, diseases and digestive complaints, so much so that it was also known as Fever Grass. Its strong citrus fragrance made it popular in perfumery and for dispelling bad odours. Of course, Lemon Grass’s main use is in cooking – particularly in Thai, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Sri Lankan, Malaysian and Caribbean cuisines. Although Lemongrass is a perennial, it’s frost tender and unlikely to survive the winter outside. However, it’s a great plant for pots and can be bought inside to overwinter in a heated greenhouse or conservatory.

Of all the herbs which will brazenly self-seed all over your garden, and there are a lot, pot marigold is the most forgivable. It loves to find its own place to thrive, which might not be where you thought or wanted! Such a cheery, happy herb, it metaphorically blesses those who touch it, traditionally treating rashes, minor burns, cuts and skin conditions. Supposedly called ‘Pot’ marigold not because it looks fantastic in pots, although it does, but because its leaves were tossed into the cooking pot. Marjoram is Oreganos sweeter, milder twin sister. They’re often confused but once you get to know them, you’ll appreciate their subtle differences. Marj is a real sun worshipper- she can’t get enough rays and will be happy in a south or bright west facing position, in fertile free draining soil. Equally at home lounging in a pot on a warm windowsill, her leaves have a delicate flavour and are heaven scattered onto a pizza fresh from a woodfired oven (along with her mate, Basil). Milk thistle, known scientifically as Silybum marianum, is a spiky yet beautiful herb with the best latin name of any plant, in our opinion! It’s one of those wildflowers which maybe considered a weed – it’s very vigorous and will spread quickly. However, if you’ve room in your garden it’s a wonderful, architectural plant, loved by bees and butterflies and of course is renowned as a natural remedy for liver conditions. It’s a great plant for a cat safe or dog friendly garden and is actually used in some pet supplements to boost liver functions. The spikey leaves generally discourage nibbling anyway.

Apple mint (aka Woolly Mint) is a tall variety with bum fluffy leaves and a wonderful appley scent and taste. It makes a brilliant alternative to garden mint and enjoys the same conditions – rich, moist soil and dappled shade. It’s more vigorous than most mints, which is saying something, so you’ll need to keep an eye on it and give it a good seeing to if it gets out of hand. If you’re a mint lover or just like wonderfully aromatic herbs, then mint Berries & Cream plants are for you. It’s more compact and less sprawling than other mint plants and has lovely fresh green leaves which darken as they get older. Like other mints, it can get out of hand quickly and is almost impossible to kill. So, if you don’t want to be overwhelmed, it’s best grown in a pot or container where you can enjoy the unique scent and beautiful pink flowers in the summer. Not surprisingly, the really special thing about Mentha 'Berries and Cream' is its unique, sweet, fruity fragrance which has hints of summer fruits with a more mild, minty finish than other mint varieties.

Garden Mint aka Spearmint (it’s rapper name) is a friendly, sweetly scented perennial which is virtually unkillable. In fact, it can be a bit too friendly and in the right conditions can get out of hand, so is best grown in a pot. It’s fast growing, so you can regularly pick refreshing leaves for desserts, sauces, cocktails and baking. The soothing and decongestant qualities of mint are well known, it’s also extensively used in skin care products. Create wonderfully scented hanging basket with this vigorous, trailing mint. Indian Mint (Satureja douglasii) isn't a true mint but it does a damn good impression! Brilliant for teas and with a load of health benefits, it has a strong, unique minty scent and is really easy to grow. A perennial, it's not fully hardy but will over winter in mild areas or in a sheltered position. Trailing or spreading up to 1m, with small serrated leaves and pretty, dainty white flowers.

A mint bred specifically for use in a mojito – what’s not to like? Said to have originated in Cuba – the home of the mojito, it has a delightfully mild minty taste with hints of citrus. Like all mints, its vigorous and pretty un-killable. It will enjoy a range of soils, but will do the rumba in fertile, free-draining soil kept moist. It’s another sociable mint and will happily spread given half a chance, so is best restricted to pots and containers in a sunny or semi-shaded position. Even if you’re death to plants, you should be ok with Peppermint. It’s a cool, laidback herb – happy to chill in most aspects and soil types. Unlike its mates from the Mediterranean herb brat pack, it enjoys rich moist soil and dappled shade. Peppermint has a sharper, more intense flavour than garden mint, making it excellent for teas, cocktails and desserts. This small leaved, compact variety of mint smells delightfully of strawberries and has a minty/berry taste too. Absolutely perfect for a summer fruit cup or cocktail, the leaves should be lightly crushed and muddled into your favourite drink.
