Borage – Is it the star flower in a medicinal herb garden?

Borage plants (aka starflower) has been prized for its medicinal prowess since early times. In modern times, borage seed oil is used as a powerful anti-inflammatory to relieve a whole host of chronic conditions.

Medicinal History of Borage

Borage, originally found in the Mediterranean region, has been used for its medicinal properties in antiquity. The plant was believed to have a calming effect on the nerves and was used by warriors before going into battle, to bring them courage. Bee-Master
And then, pell-mell, his harvest follows swift, - Blossom and borage, lime and balm and clover,
On Downs the thyme, on cliffs the scantling thrift, - Everywhere bees go racing with the hours,
For every bee becomes a drunken lover, - Standing upon his head to sup the flowers,
Vita Sackville-West (1936)

Parts of Borage Used for Medicine

The leaves, seeds and flowers of the plant are used for medicine. The leaves (fresh or dried) are steeped to make tea and taken as a calming diuretic, the edible flowers are rich in antioxidants and look stunning in a salad or summer cocktail. The seeds are crushed to make borage oil which is usually applied topically to skin and hair. As a tincture, the oil is taken for a range of anti-inflammatory uses.

Active Medical Ingredients in Borage

The most important ingredient in Borage seed oil is anti-inflammatory, gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) and is the richest know source of this Omega-6 fatty acid. This type of fatty acid cannot be made by the body, so a natural source is needed.

The plant is rich in an important group of compounds called polyphenols. They are known for their antioxidant properties and ability to scavenge free radicals which can have a positive effect on skin health.

Borage seed oil should not be taken in large doses or if pregnant or breastfeeding. People with liver problems and low blood pressure should avoid.

Popularised by the famously multi-estranged folk duo Simon & Garfunkel, Scarborough Fair is a traditional northern English ballad about the impossible tasks a girl will to do to claim her true love. However, the inspiration from this collection came from the fabulous ‘Scarborough’ sausages of butchers Burton & Son in Saffron Walden. Original lyrics used ‘savory’ instead of ‘parsley’ – which is handy.

Where have all the butterflies gone? The sight of buddleia bushes pulsating with masses of vibrant species seems like a childhood memory. Unfortunately, it's not nostalgic rose-tintedness, there's been an 80% reduction in UK butterflies since the 1970's. Hopefully times are changing, with fewer pesticides used and rewilding being encouraged. These herbs will do their bit.
