  • Tarragon - French - Fyne Herbs

    Tarragon - French

    38 reviews

    Out of stock

French Tarragon has an unfair reputation as a problem - difficult to grow and quick to die. You just need to remember its more tender than most and hates overwintering in wet soil. Plant in full sun, in a herb bed or large pot with fertile, light, free-draining soil and you’ll be fine. It’ll grow vigorously when happy and should return again and again as long as it’s tucked up over winter or bought indoors (in pots).  Tarragon will be really happy growing in our pot on a sunny windowsill until it needs potting on.

  • Teasel

    Fyne Herbs singles Teasel

    1 review

    13 in stock

Teasel (Dipascus fullonum) is unique amongst wildflower herbs in that it’s arguably more useful dead than alive! In autumn and winter, the unmistakable sight of spires of dried teasel stems and spikey heads are commonly found along hedgerows, roadsides, waste ground, and in woodland margins. They provide valuable bird food – especially for Goldfinches, and flocks of these beautiful birds can often be seen teasing out the fine seed from the spiney heads.  The dried stems also make excellent, natural decorations for flower arrangements and Christmas wreaths. Back in the day, teasels were in great demand in the textile industry where the dried seed heads, with their stiff hooked bracts, were used to “tease” or raise the nap on woollen cloth—hence the name teasel. This easy to grow biennial should be part of any wildflower area or garden, they’ll thrive in most conditions and when alive and in flower, will attract a host of bee’s and butterflies.

  • Thyme - Archers Gold

    Thyme - Archers Gold

    Out of stock

You can’t have enough thyme in our opinion, especially if you love to use it in cooking or want to provide valuable nectar for bees and butterflies. Thyme Archers Gold (Thymus pulegioides ‘Archers Gold’) is a really special variety that’s a bit different from other cultivars. It has the most beautiful golden foliage which positively glows when the sun shines on it.  Archers Gold is a low growing broad leaf thyme which has a milder taste than common thyme with a slight minty, lemon tang and gentle peppery finish. A brilliant culinary variety, it’s ideally suited to desserts, cakes and sweet dishes which don’t require a robust thyme flavour. Lovely in a cocktail or as a garnish, the golden yellow leaves offer something a bit different. In the garden, it’s a mound forming, spreading, evergreen (or evergold!) perennial which is happy at the front of borders, alongside path edges, in rockeries or pots. The vibrant foliage offers something different and gives year-round interest.

    Thyme - Common

    26 reviews

    Out of stock

There are lots of thyme varieties, but this is the original and the best. The nearest thing to wild thyme, dried bunches of which you’ll see hanging in markets from Provence to Tuscany. As you can imagine, it likes a warm, bright location. South facing is best, planting in full sun brings out the essential oils in the leaves, concentrating the flavour. All thyme enjoys light, well-drained soil and hates waterlogging, especially in winter.  Common Thyme will be really happy growing in our pot on a sunny windowsill until it needs potting on.

  • Thyme - Foxley

    Thyme - Foxley

    8 in stock

If you’re a big thyme lover, you’ll want to add Thyme Foxley (Thymus pulegioides ‘Foxley’) to your collection. It’s a low growing variety with delightfully colourful, variated leaves ranging from creamy yellow to soft peach. A broad leaved, spreading thyme, Foxley is a great choice for pots, hanging baskets and rockeries. It’ll spread gently and flower with small spikes of vivid purple flowers which are adored by bees and butterflies.  Like all thyme, it has a lovely fragrance and is of course, wonderful in the kitchen flavouring all manner of sweet and savoury dishes, drinks, teas and cocktails. The beauty of this cheerful little chap is that in the summer the leaves are flecked with creamy hues and in the winter, they change to more peachy, coopery shades. So, style as well as substance! Thyme Foxley, like the rest of the family, is very hardy and used to coping with our unpredictable winters. It doesn’t like being waterlogged and is pretty drought resistant once established.

Thyme with a citrussy twist. Lemon scented and herb garden must have, this thyme variation has everything. It’s a tough, Mediterranean sun lover that enjoys light, free draining soil and hates waterlogging. An excellent variety for pots where you can control the drainage and moisture. In cooking it pairs brilliantly with chicken and the higher levels of citronella in the lemony leaves, give it medicinal powers other thymes don’t have… Your Lemon Thyme will be really happy growing in our pot on a sunny windowsill until it needs potting on.

Toadflax is a delightful, cheerful wildflower herb which spreads freely and can get a bit out of hand. It’s hard to complain at its profligacy because Toadflax flowers are a designed for bees and look simply gorgeous. Often called ‘wild snapdragons’ due to their resemblance to Antirrhinums, they’re actually second cousins or something and are certainly more useful! Unfortunately, Toadflax doesn't play well with cats and dogs - it can be toxic if eaten.  Historically, Toadflax was used as a natural dye for producing yellow hues. It was considered a “herb of the people,” appreciated for its medicinal properties and its association with purity and resilience.

    Valerian

    2 reviews

    Out of stock

Valerian is a pretty, native wildflower which attracts an abundance of friendlies to your garden, including cats (friendly or not) and has a rich medicinal history. It has many common names including ‘all-heal’ and ‘phu’ (pooh) which is appropriate as the dried root smells of sweaty socks! Cats love its ripe scent; it stimulates them in a similar way to catnip. It loves a rich, moist position and will grow in most aspects and soil types.    Valerian is very vigorous but will be ok in our pot on a sunny windowsill to begin with, although it really needs planting out asap.

    Fyne Herbs singles Viper's Bugloss

    1 review

    5 in stock

If you want to bring all the bees to the yard then growing Viper’s Bugloss is a must. It’s a striking native wildflower herb with electric-blue flowers and bristly stems, also known as blueweed or blue devil and is famous for its bee appeal. Like most native wildflowers, Viper’s Bugloss is incredibly easy to grow - is suitable for most soil types and enjoys full sun. It just likes to be left alone to get on with its main purpose which seems to be to attract as many bees and pollinators as possible! Once thought to cure snake bites due to the speckled stems and seeds resembling a viper’s skin or head, it’s not a culinary plant and is now rarely used in medicinal remedies.

Where have all the butterflies gone? The sight of buddleia bushes pulsating with masses of vibrant species seems like a childhood memory. Unfortunately, it's not nostalgic rose-tintedness, there's been an 80% reduction in UK butterflies since the 1970's. Hopefully times are changing, with fewer pesticides used and rewilding being encouraged. These herbs will do their bit.

Popularised by the famously multi-estranged folk duo Simon & Garfunkel, Scarborough Fair is a traditional northern English ballad about the impossible tasks a girl will to do to claim her true love. However, the inspiration from this collection came from the fabulous ‘Scarborough’ sausages of butchers Burton & Son in Saffron Walden. Original lyrics used ‘savory’ instead of ‘parsley’ – which is handy.

Long before the menopause was recognised as a normal part of the aging process, women looked to herbs for natural menopause relief. This collection of herb plants have all traditionally been used in various menopause remedies and make a humorous and possibly useful, holistic gift for friends, family or yourself. Women have long been managing their menopause symptoms naturally using herbs instead of HRT. The herbs in this collection are most often used in tea to treat hot flushes, night sweats, low mood and energy. Essential oils can also be extracted and used in aromatherapy, atomisers, tinctures and balms. Whilst these are believed to be some of the best herbs for relieving menopause symptoms, they are not a substitute for professional advice about treatment.
