Top 10 tips for growing herbs indoors

Top 10 tips for growing herbs indoors

Many herbs will be perfectly happy growing indoors on a sunny windowsill or shelf. Although they are culinary powerhouses, don't just confine them to the kitchen - they'll be happy anywhere if you follow these top 10 tips for growing herbs indoors. Our unique collections make growing herbs indoors easy and stress-free, with everything you need included.

Your essential guide for growing herbs indoors.

Growing fresh herbs indoors gives you easy access and looks lovely. However, it’s not their natural environment, so you’ll need to be understanding. It’s not personal, most varieties would rather be outside, but if you follow these top 10 tips you’ll be fyne!

1. Think about their best position.

The plants origin is a good indication of what conditions they’d like and where to put them. Herbs from the Med will want it bright and hot, UK natives cooler and damp. Like a sports team, playing your herbs out of position won’t get the best from them.

2. Get creative

Not all herbs need to be in the kitchen, anywhere warm, bright and sunny is ideal. Slow growers such as Rosemary, Hyssop and Sage suit a bathroom, Lemon Verbena loves a conservatory.

3. Consider the vigour

All our herbs will be happy in on a windowsill in their decorative pots for at least a few weeks. Not all are suitable for long term growing inside, especially vigorous varieties with long tap roots.

4. Give them the right fuel

When transferring to larger pots (potting on), the compost you add is your herbs diet and quality is key.

5. Watering – not too little, not too much.

Herbs in small pots can dry out quickly, so keep an eye on watering. They don’t like sitting in water, so don’t add too much. Indoor plants will need feeding more regularly too.

6. Ventilation is key

We all need a bit of space to breathe and your herbs are no different. Good ventilation and airflow is vital, especially in humid conditions which encourage rot and mould.

7. Rotation – it’s a squad game!

It’s good to have lots of herbs outside on the subs bench so that you can rotate from time to time. Most varieties will benefit from being outside for a while, especially in the summer.

8. Getting leggy

Your herbs may stretch towards the light, especially fast growers like mint. On a darker windowsill, if they become thin and spindly (leggy) with long gaps between pairs of leaves, give them a prune back and move somewhere lighter.

9. Harvesting - snip don’t rip

Using herbs is the fun bit. When harvesting, snip the leaves and stems, don’t pull or pinch as this can damage the plant. Always cut just above a set of leaves to encourage regrowth.

10. Pot-on to avoid a rooty bottom

As your little darlings grow, they’ll need moving to a bigger home. The frequency will depend on speed of growth, final size and your usage. Re-pot when the roots come through the base - a very rooty bottom means it’s time.

Popularised by the famously multi-estranged folk duo Simon & Garfunkel, Scarborough Fair is a traditional northern English ballad about the impossible tasks a girl will to do to claim her true love. However, the inspiration from this collection came from the fabulous ‘Scarborough’ sausages of butchers Burton & Son in Saffron Walden. Original lyrics used ‘savory’ instead of ‘parsley’ – which is handy.

Since early man (and women) first became aware of B.O., herbs of many sorts have been used to de-odour, cleanse and heal the skin. Unsurprisingly, the herbs in this collection all bring scent to the party (except Marigold but she brings the colour), but that’s not their only super-power. They all have different, traditional skin healing properties and are lovely in handmade soaps.

Where have all the butterflies gone? The sight of buddleia bushes pulsating with masses of vibrant species seems like a childhood memory. Unfortunately, it's not nostalgic rose-tintedness, there's been an 80% reduction in UK butterflies since the 1970's. Hopefully times are changing, with fewer pesticides used and rewilding being encouraged. These herbs will do their bit.
