Dill – The magic plant that will protect and soothe.

Dill – The magic plant that will protect and soothe.

Dill is a herb long respected for its calming and relaxing properties, its name literally means to lull or soothe. Dill plants also contain flavonoids packed with heart boosting antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds which may help reduce blood pressure and cholesterol. In the Middle ages, dill (aka the ‘magician’s herb’) was employed as a protection against witchcraft and the devil.

Medicinal History of Dill

Dill has a rich history that dates back to antiquity. The Ancient Egyptians used it as a medicinal plant over 3,000 years ago, and it was a symbol of vitality in Greek culture. In the bible it was referred to as Anethum, its Greek name. In the Middle Ages, dill was believed to have protective properties and was used by magicians in their spells. Many cultures cultivated dill for its calming qualities, particularly its ability to soothe an upset stomach. It is thought that the name comes from an old Norse word, dilla which means to lull or soothe.

Top Five Medicinal Uses of Dill

1. Digestive Health

A decoction of dill leaves and seeds has been traditionally used to soothe digestive ailments. Its antispasmodic properties help in reducing stomach cramps and helps with bloating and flatulence. dill essential oil has been shown to relieve discomfort in the gastrointestinal tract.

A little fresh dill sprinkled on your dog or cat’s favourite dinner might help to settle an upset stomach.

2. Heart Health

Some studies suggest that dill extract could help reduce blood pressure, cholesterol and inflammation, all vital for good cardiovascular health. dill contains flavonoids which have heart boosting antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

3. Diabetes

There is evidence to suggest that dill could be useful for treating diabetes. A study of diabetic rats showed that those given dill essential oil had a marked reduction in blood glucose levels and a significant increase in insulin.

4. Sleep and mood

Dill has been used as a calmative for thousands of years. In tea it is taken as a remedy for insomnia and sleep disorders. The free radical fighting flavonoids (say that quickly out loud…!) and B vitamins in dill reduce levels of cortisol in the brain, lowering stress and aiding sleep.

5. Detox

The edible parts of dill are all rich in compounds with detoxifying properties, including flavonoids which help to protect cells from damage by free radicals. Dill is a good source of vitamin C and tannins which have potent antioxidant and antimicrobial effects.

And here and there as Puck should go, With terror to affright him,

She nightshade straws to work him ill, Therewith her vervain and her dill,

That hindereth witches of their will, Of purpose to despite him.

Michael Drayton (1627)

Popularised by the famously multi-estranged folk duo Simon & Garfunkel, Scarborough Fair is a traditional northern English ballad about the impossible tasks a girl will to do to claim her true love. However, the inspiration from this collection came from the fabulous ‘Scarborough’ sausages of butchers Burton & Son in Saffron Walden. Original lyrics used ‘savory’ instead of ‘parsley’ – which is handy.

Where have all the butterflies gone? The sight of buddleia bushes pulsating with masses of vibrant species seems like a childhood memory. Unfortunately, it's not nostalgic rose-tintedness, there's been an 80% reduction in UK butterflies since the 1970's. Hopefully times are changing, with fewer pesticides used and rewilding being encouraged. These herbs will do their bit.
