Chervil – A fine herb for putting the spring in your step!

Chervil – A fine herb for putting the spring in your step!

Chervil was a herb traditionally thought to lift the mood and spirit. John Gerard the famous herbalist, gave it the medieval equivalent of a ‘like’ by describing it as ‘comforting the heart and increasing lust and strength’! All parts of the plant were used for medicine, including the roots and it was prized for its digestive and diuretic properties.

Medicinal History of Chervil

Chervil, native to the Caucasus region bordering Europe and Asia, has been used in homeopathic medicine for centuries. It was introduced to Asia, North America, and other parts of the world and is now widely and easily cultivated herb plant. Chervil has been used as a diuretic, an aid for digestion, an expectorant and for skin conditions. It’s a traditional remedy for treating bad dreams, stomach upsets and for soothing burns.

Top Five Medicinal Uses of Chervil

1. Heart Health

Chervil leaves are a great source of important minerals including potassium, manganese, iron, zinc, and magnesium, all have a positive effect on the cardiovascular system. Chervil is said to reduce high blood pressure, although studies are yet to prove the effects. Chervil is known to be high in nitrites which helps the body produce nitric oxide, crucial for cardiovascular health.

2. Detox

Chervil is high in antioxidants, vitamin A, vitamin C, iron and magnesium. The leaves were commonly used as a diuretic, helping to cleanse the system of excess fluids. Young leaves were often included in a refreshing, rejuvenating spring tonic.

3. Digestive Health

The leaves are a great source of dietary fibre and when dried have a very high concentration. They help sluggish digestion and have been used to relieve constipation and digestive disorders.

4. Skin Health

Chervil has antiseptic and antimicrobial properties and is rich in Vitamin A and C. All are great for skin and hair health, protecting them from damage caused by free radicals. Studies have shown that it might help in the treatment of inflammatory skin conditions including eczema, acne and dermatitis.

5. Immunity Booster

Herbal infusions of chervil were often taken as an immune booster or spring tonic. The leaves are high in antioxidants and vitamins C and A, benefitting the immune system and helping to fight damaging free radicals. Some believe that eating chervil regularly can reduce the risk of coughs, colds and fevers.

Thou art indeed just, Lord, if I contend

With fretty chervil, look, and fresh wind shakes - Them; birds build – but not I build; no, but strain,

Time’s eunuch, and not breed one work that wakes. Mine, O thou lord of life, send my roots rain.

Gerard Manley Hopkins (1899)

Parts of Chervil Used for Medicine

All of the parts of this herb plant can be used; roots, leaves and flowers. The leaves generally have the greatest use and can be eaten fresh or dried. Leaves and roots are steeped to make herbal tea and a decoction form its flowers, mixed into a poultice, is said to relieve joint pain and inflammation.

Add a handful fresh leaves to your favourite smoothy for an immunity boosting shot.

Active Medical Ingredients in Chervil

Chervil is packed full of vitamins and minerals and yes, you could probably call it a superfood. It’s rich in dietary fibre, potassium, vitamin A, vitamin C and antioxidants. Volatile oils and antioxidants such as flavonoids boost cell health and help in the fight against free radicals. Chervil is one of the best sources of nitrate and nitrite which produce Nitric oxide in the body, crucial for cardiovascular health.

Important.
Herbs have been used in medicines for thousands of years and a few leaves here and there are unlikely to be harmful. However, if you intend to start taking herbs medicinally or to treat a specific health condition, please seek the advice of your GP and a qualified herbalist, first.

Popularised by the famously multi-estranged folk duo Simon & Garfunkel, Scarborough Fair is a traditional northern English ballad about the impossible tasks a girl will to do to claim her true love. However, the inspiration from this collection came from the fabulous ‘Scarborough’ sausages of butchers Burton & Son in Saffron Walden. Original lyrics used ‘savory’ instead of ‘parsley’ – which is handy.

Where have all the butterflies gone? The sight of buddleia bushes pulsating with masses of vibrant species seems like a childhood memory. Unfortunately, it's not nostalgic rose-tintedness, there's been an 80% reduction in UK butterflies since the 1970's. Hopefully times are changing, with fewer pesticides used and rewilding being encouraged. These herbs will do their bit.
